4 Tips to Remember When Staying Outdoors

Whether you’re a fan of under-the-stars glamping or adventurous fly fishing, you can’t be too careful when spending time outdoors. The memories you leave with will depend entirely on how prepared you are for your weekend in nature.

If you aren’t knowledgeable about your surroundings and are going on an outdoor excursion for the first time, here are four tips you should always keep in mind when planning to stay outdoors.

Prepare for Every Scenario

When in the great outdoors, nothing is predictable. No matter what the weather report promises, you should be equally prepared for the opposite forecast. As a rule of thumb, items you’ll want to have on your person are protective clothing, multiple water bottles, and a tent that can withstand the elements.

When going on a hike, never pursue a trail alone. Keep a printed photo of each individual in your group in your pocket if you become separated. Consider taking a satellite phone if you are traveling somewhere with a poor mobile connection—and keep those emergency numbers listed!

Research Your Destination

The core of an excellent outdoor experience is gathering as much information about your destination as possible. Before booking your trip, you’ll want to build an arsenal of fresh knowledge by watching online documentaries, consulting travel brochures, or interviewing a guide.

When researching your destination, note the following information:

  • What is the climate in the area?
  • What is the primary mode of transportation?
  • Where can I seek help if I need it?
  • What do other travelers have to say about the area?
  • What are the requirements for international driving permit?

Pack the Right Gear

While you may be pondering the correct type of sunglasses to purchase online or what color knapsack best suits your outdoor get-up, there are other essentials you should be prioritizing. Items that should be on your camping checklist are:

  • A tent: Your emergency shelter should include a rope, tent poles, a rain fly, and stakes.
  • A water bottle: Water is essential to keeping yourself nourished while in nature. Consider purchasing a water bottle with a filter or stocking up on purification tablets.
  • First aid kit: While a simple hike won’t typically result in a life-threatening injury, you’ll want to prepare yourself for a couple of bruises or cuts—especially on a fishing trip. Necessities to pack into your first aid kit are bandages, antiseptic solution, scissors, and soap.
  • A map and compass: If you’re exploring remote areas, you shouldn’t go without a map, compass, or GPS device. Ever-changing conditions can make landmarks appear unfamiliar—being well-prepared will keep you from losing your way.

Be Spontaneous

The key to enjoying your outdoor adventure is to allow for a bit of spontaneity. Nature is hardly what you’d expect it to be—an afternoon of sunshine could quickly become a night of rain. If you find that your initial campground is currently uninhabitable, don’t hesitate to consider what else your destination has in store—with the help of an expert, of course!

Are You Ready for Your Next Great Outdoor Adventure?

Preparing for the perfect family camping trip or fishing adventure shouldn’t have to be more trouble than it is exciting. However, a little research can go a long way.

With these four camping must-knows, you can expect your outdoor expedition to be as magnificent as you hope!
