Background of the Yacht

A magnificent ship was the idea of the famous yacht designer, Peter Essington. Craftsmanship for the construction of the vessel, installation of latest amenities and fabulous designing was used which put this magnificent 122 feet yacht in the limelight of luxury yachting business. Aurelia was one of the most engineering wonders of modern maritime; it had five magnificent cabins, a huge main deck and a spectacular helicopter touch-down pad. In particular, the owner of the place was a rich IT-company owner known for his large-scale parties and celebrations that interested representatives of high society.

The Capsize

The morning in question was ill fated when the yacht was taking the sea with eight crew, and sixteen guest passengers on board at one of the beautiful Charlies-bay in the Chesapeake Bay area, and at that was a tragedy. As the $8 million yacht was sailing along the Annapolis harbor was approaching a particularly dangerous shoal, a place where the currents are strong and the winds gusting. The captain, who is a professional sailor who has spent years sailing around the region, made an error of judgment by misjudging the direction in which the yacht was headed, he then crashed the yacht into a concrete pier.

The force, strong enough to penetrate the yacht’s skin or hull, brought a deluge of water into the yacht which capsized almost immediately. Fast currents and tendencies to capsize and flood were dangerous and left the passengers and employees panicked and confused. In less than 30 minutes the luxurious yacht was upside down on the harbor with crew and guest swimming in the water.

Search and Rescue Efforts

Luckily the US coast guard station is a few miles from the scene, the team managed to respond to the distress call. Some of the rescue boats and helicopters were quick to descend on the scene, their ambulances lights and sirens echoing throughout the morning fog.

Immediately, highly skilled rescue groups of professionals and lifeboat crew began a Search and Rescue to locate occupants of the capsized yacht. The presence of water encouraged the rescue operation as well as the favorable weather conditions. A capsized yacht was identified by sonar equipment and scuba divers with all people saved, though some had bruises, within a few hours.

Investigations and Legalities

But after the rescue, some of the organizations that have sought to investigate include the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Coast Guard. They investigated the vessel’s documentation; interrogated the captain and other crew members and investigated the accident scene.

From the aforesaid findings it was realized that human error did have prior bearing on the actual occurrence. The captain misjudged the situation and was an unfit person to hold the helm while the yacht operated at high speed. Moreover, it was determined that, the owner of the vessel instructed the crew of that vessel to depart from some of the safety checks and inspections with a hope of incorporating more entertainment features to augment seaworthiness of the vessel.

As investigations continue, the owner of $8 million yacht, captain and crew members can be liable for the accident. Additionally, if there were any structural defects that helped lead to the near instant capsize of the yacht, the structure and architecture of the yacht will also be under the strong radar.

Lessons Learned

For all marines, sailors, yacht owners and its enthusiasts and professionals. Firstly, they emphasize compliance with safety regulations as well as the inspection of vessels to confirm that they are sea worthy. Luxury or even advancement in technology cannot resolve lack of care or carelessness.

Secondly, the event under discussion proves that navigation should be approached seriously and the officer providing it should possess appropriate training and experience. Despite all the researchers who define the dangers of shipping activities and venture explaining why and how disasters occur at sea, basic probabilities of accidents remain high even in the most frequently used and quite familiar large harbors. As such it becomes the responsibility of the captain and the crew members to always be careful any time they are operating their ships.

Finally, the accident points to the need of emergency response teams during a maritime calamity. I doubt that Coast Guard service, and the helicopter pilots and rescue crews demonstrated over the last week and a half have lost a single soul to cold water drowning, and their rapid response must serve as a reminder of the value of prepared, adequately funded and equipped response units.

Conclusion

The sad story of the $8 million yacht that capsized near Annapolis will remain a horror story of human life and nature. But we continued to create and to operate ultra-modern, extravagant yachts, always remembering the tragic event, the inexperienced narrow mindedness, the insufficient preparedness, the negligence of the safety measures in the luxury yachting sector. That’s why, with these principles, we can avoid similar accidents and let people feel that the sea is still a wonderful and majestic place to be in.
